This morning, this woman who I see often was working at Northside (the place that I eat at). She's older, has shakey hands, a genuine smile, and always wishes me to have a great day whenever I see her. Her job is to refill the napkins and salt and pepper shakers, and clean up any messes left on the tables that hundreds of students use every day. It was 11am, and her manager came over to her and gave her a lecture about coming to work too early, and was clearly annoyed at her for it. She told him that she loved her job, and woke up every morning eager to get to work. He rolled his eyes, and told her not to come in more than 10 minutes early any longer. She looked down, nodded her head, and kept working as he explained that they don't budget for her to be working for and extra half an hour each day.
Is this the kind of world that we really live in? Do people really get mad when an employee gets to work a little too early because she simply loves her job? And for what? To make maybe $8.50 an hour? There is probably nothing more rewarding and satisfying to this woman to be given the opportunity to work at her age, and she's doing a great job at it while taking it upon herself to wish busy students off with a smile.
Why can't more people see that it's not just the money she wants. She actually likes her job. She lives for her job. And even if it may be some light janitorial work at a university cafeteria, she probably values her job more than a person making 5 times as much as her does. Just let the beautiful elderly woman with shakey hands and a beautiful smile work. It's important to her. Why isn't her happiness important to you?
